DeVos, who was one of the more controversial choices President Donald Trump made for his Cabinet, entered the school despite the protest and visited with a group of 7- and 8-year-olds.

Secretary DeVos did not speak with reporters after the reading.

The billionaire philanthropist was considered an unconventional pick for education secretary. The power that DeVos seeks to bestow is related to what has been a banner for her in criticizing education in the United States: choice through the use of school vouchers.

"It's a wonderful place with wonderful teachers and administrators and volunteers who do so very much for so very many kids with incredibly strapped resources", Kohn said of her daughter's public school.

DeVos released the statement before attending an event at an elementary school in the same county with Gov. Larry Hogan, The Washington Post reported.

"I'm actually an advocate for parents having the opportunity to choose the best education environment for their child", DeVos said.

DeVos has strong ties to Florida, especially the Orlando area.

Opponents of privatization contend that diverting billions of taxpayer dollars from public schools to Christian and Catholic institutions, which make up the majority of private schools in the United States, also raises concerns about the traditional American separation of church and state affairs. Critics have accused the MI billionaire and Trump of trying to gut the public education system by steering more taxpayer money toward school choice options. "I would like to thank Secretary DeVos for joining Maryland in celebrating National Reading Month and look forward to working together to ensure that Maryland families have access to the high-quality education our students want and deserve". "Let's give parents options".
