Xinhua news agency said students were crowded into a toilet during the morning break in Puyang when others began pushing their way in.

At least two students were killed today and 20 others injured, five of them critically, in a stampede at a primary school in China's central Henan Province. Puyang county's government told the Associated Press the incident was under investigation but wouldn't provide further details.

The incident happened this morning as students rushed into the school's toilet before a monthly exam. Twenty others who had been injured were sent to hospital, with five of them in critical condition.

Overcrowding and poor building design have been blamed for past injuries and crushing deaths at Chinese schools.

The stampede occurred at around 8:30 a.m. A local publicity official denied social media reports that the cause of the stampede was the collapse of a bathroom wall.

Understating the science and nature of large crowds is vital to safety.
