Best actress nominee Ruth Negga was among the first celebrities to arrive at the ceremony in Hollywood, which is expected to be dominated by political speeches.

The ACLU confirmed it's behind the accessory on Twitter, encouraging conversation with tweets like "Who ever thought we'd be fashion icons?" The actress, 35, pinned a blue American Civil Liberties Union ribbon to her dress, to show support for the organization which plays a major role in her film.

Brie Larson, a presenter tonight and last year's Best Actress Oscar victor, proudly tweeted that she would be supporting the ACLU prior to walking the red carpet. "It's a vital organization that relies entirely on our support".

Mayor of Limerick Kieran O'Hanlon had said that, irrespective of whether she took home the gold statuette, he would be inviting the Oscar nominee and her family to a mayoral reception in her honour before the end of his term.

#Hamilton's @Lin_Manuel is also wearing a blue @ACLU ribbon.

The campaign was launched last week and Hollywood stars are being encouraged to wear the ribbon as an act of solidarity with the organisation which has campaigned for almost 100 years to defend and protect the individual civil rights of citizens.

"For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has worked to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States", the organization lists as its mission on its official website. Loving is based on the true story of an interracial couple, Mildred and Richard Loving, who were defended by the ACLU after they were arrested in Virginia in 1958.

"Moana" songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, who could potentially become an EGOT victor tonight, wore a blue ribbon to support the ACLU.

Negga then soon followed by another celebrity Lin-Manuel Miranda along with hi mother, both of them spotted with the political accessory.

Model Karlie Kloss also showed her support, wearing the ribbon against her white gown.
