The bus was attacked at Nagaha junction in Kalutara, Colombo.

A prison officer also lost his life in the incident.

The prisoners were being driven to court for a hearing when the audacious daytime attack took place, police said.

Seven people were killed when gunmen shot at a bus transporting prisoners to a court in south west Sri Lanka, reports say.

Thushara Upuldeniya, spokesman for the Prison Department, said an armed gang blocked the bus in Kalutara, 40 km (25 miles) south of the capital, transporting the prisoners, who included an underworld figure.

Police set up roadblocks after six people were killed in two separate incidents on that day, AFP news agency reports.

Several police have also been killed by gangsters in the past year despite stepped-up police operations across the country.

Accordingly, Senior Police Officer in charge of investigation said the shooting seemed to be premeditated.
