During the press conference, Mayor Bowser praised Newsham's transparency and commitment to community policing: "He truly values and respects the residents of Washington, D.C".

Police spokesman Officer Sean Hickman says the wounded officers were conscious and breathing when they were transported to a hospital.

Chief Newsham said that it appeared that both uniform officers were shot in the "lower extremities" and that those injuries did not appear life threatening.

The Mayor of Washington, Muriel Bowser, has visited the injured officers in hospital.

The incident occurred hours after Newsham, Washington's interim police for five months, was officially named police chief.

A male suspect was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital and a weapon was recovered at the scene.

Local councilman Kenyan McDuffie said: 'These fearless men and women are working hard, but we need to better support our officers in the community. Newsham has been serving as interim chief since September when Chief Cathy Lanier departed to take on a new role with the NFL. Officers said earlier in the night, four men were shot in three different shootings in the city.
