Jonathan Ryan, 32, of Shoreham and Brandon Barrett, 23, of Benson were reported missing on Thursday, Feb. 9.

On Wednesday, a joint search by State Police troopers from Vermont and NY found a body in the waters of Lake Champlain near the area where searchers suspected the two had fallen through a section of thin ice.

It's unclear whether the recovered body is one of the two missing snowmobilers.

Crews from NY and Vermont have been searching for the pair on the NY side of the lake with dive teams and sonar. His body was found in about 20 feet of water off Putnam Station, north of where his snowmobile went into the water late last week. The second body that was found was believed to be that of Ryan, but formal identification efforts were planned later Thursday. They are believed to have left Benson Village on the evening of February 9 and never returned. They either broke through thin ice or drove into open water in the dark. Snowmobiles and articles of clothing belonging to the pair were located.

Both men are experienced snowmobilers with knowledge of the lake.

Police tracked their snowmobiles onto the ice. Teams found their snowmobiles in the water Sunday near the NY shore.
