Spending at Local Merchants Could Earn You Uber Discounts

A partnership between Uber and Visa will enable customers to earn discounted rides when they use their Visa credit card on file with Uber at their favorite local merchants. "I think something that's cool about this is that because users do use Uber already to explore their city and the shops and restaurants there, it gives them a way to get rewarded for doing that". There are no codes or coupons to manage for this, the points will automatically tally up in the app as soon as the Visa credit card linked to the account is charged for a ride. From here, riders can view a list of participating places where they can earn Uber points, enroll in the program, and track their progress and points. Rack up 100 points and that means $10 off a future Uber ride.

Uber today unveiled a new program called Local Offers that is initially available to users in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Visa said that there is a natural fit between incentivizing its cardholders to spend at local merchants and on Uber. So far the company has more than 13 businesses such as Barcito, Ike's, Mixt Greens, Peet's Coffee, PizzaRev, Uno Dos Tacos, Specialty's Café & Bakery, Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que, Super Duper, Delarosa, The Pie Hole, Veggie Grill, and Wurstküche.

As Uber - now valued at more than $60 billion - irons out its business model, it is testing new programs like Local Offers to get more people to use its app.
