EXACTLY how and why a would-be robber was shot to death close to the Olympic Village in Rio de Janeiro today is becoming murkier by the minute, with Russian Federation denying one of its diplomats was involved.

There were conflicting reports about the identity of the man, with the Associated Press quoting Rio police as saying that he was a vice-consul at the Russian consulate.

For the armed mugger who approached a sleek BMW caught in one of Rio De Janeiro's traffic jams close to the Olympic Park on Thursday the luxury auto was a tragic choice of target. "The assailant died of his wounds on the spot", police said in a statement.

Rabat -Russian diplomat shot and killed man who attempted robbery, using the mugger's own gun, police say. But one criminal chose the wrong target in a decision that led to chaotic scenes. The consulate of Russian Federation in Rio said more information will be given on Friday about the case.

The shooting took place on Avenida das Americas, the main street in Rio's Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, where the Olympic Village and the majority of Olympic venues are.

There have been terror threats on the Rio games.

A struggle followed, during which the diplomat grabbed the mugger's gun and shot him dead.

One attacker smashed the driver's window of the vehicle with a gun, and demanded the man's watch.

As the attack began the reported Russian diplomat grabbed the assailant and pulled him inside his BMW.

Several nations have warned their athletes competing at the games been warned about the dangers of Rio, with more than 80,000 security personnel deployed to secure the city and the Olympic Games.
