Rihanna's VMA triumph has nothing to do with her love life

As Beyonce took to the stage to give her speech, Kanye tried to show his affection to his wife by putting his arm around her.

"Family Zone", he captioned the photo alongside a string of crown emojis.

Britney Spears - mother of two and pop goddess - made a triumphant return to the VMA stage after nine years away from it.

The photo also confirms Jay Z was in NY during the VMAs, as he wasn't spotted during the broadcast. After West's speech, he introduced his music video for "Fade" featuring singer Teyana Taylor, who is signed to West's GOOD Music label.

Britney Spears performs at the MTV Video Music Awards at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016, in NY.

Kanye West used his air time at the MTV Video Music Awards to touch on a number of subjects, calling out rival Taylor Swift and his ex-girlfriend Amber Rose and bringing attention to gun violence in the U.S.

More so than anything else, what made Britney's previous foray onto the VMAs stage so troubling wasn't her stumbling or lack of attempts to even try and lip sync.

It's been a minute, but Teyana Taylor managed to slay all your faves at the VMAs on Sunday night, which means it's only right to give her the spotlight right now.

Her politically charged "Formation" beat Adele's 2015 comeback single "Hello", Drake's "Hotline Bling", Justin Bieber's "Sorry" and Kanye West's sleeping nude celebrity look-alikes in "Famous" for video of the year.

Coldplay, Desiigner, Fergie and Alessia Cara earned multiple nominations, while David Bowie - who died from cancer earlier this year - nematography, art direction and editing for "Lazarus".

Rihanna kicked off the show with a medley of her hits Don't Stop the Music, We Found Love and Where Have You Been.

Jimmy Fallon, who presented video of the year, dressed up as Ryan Lochte and even sported the swimmer's platinum blonde hair.

Other presenters include Alicia Keys, Puff Daddy and four of the Final Five gymnasts - Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian (Gabby Douglas was hospitalised for a mouth infection). Needless to say, she looked stunning.

The singer also took home the award for Breakthrough Long-Form Video for "Lemonade", which first aired on HBO.
