And, it's a story that sets up tonight's 200 butterfly final - which NBC will be sure to milk for all its worth - to be perhaps the showdown of this year's Olympics.

There is some sort of rivalry between Phelps and le Clos.

Phelps retired four years ago, insisting he was done with swimming, only to return for what he calls his real farewell, the one that will send him out the way he really wants to go. Phelps will compete for the 20th gold medal of his career Tuesday night.

Things are much different now, but once again, they'll be watching Chad take on the most decorated Olympian in history.

"When I was on the block, I honestly thought my heart was going to explode out of my chest", Phelps said.

Given the form he showed in his Rio debut, five more golds are certainly within reach.

"It is hard because to be honest with you I don't have that many memories of four years ago because it has been such a journey for us all since then".

Le Clos famously snatched gold from Phelps in the same event at the 2012 Olympics. There's been a lot made of his rivalry with Phelps, and that vicious stare the American had on his face before the semifinals Monday, but for le Clos, he won't be thinking about Phelps in the end. In the meantime, people on the internet can't get enough of Phelps' expression. "I just wanted to hammer it, hit the touch and give them a bigger lead".
