Federer, the victor of a record 17 majors and a five-time champion in NY, shut down his season to rest a knee injury which was aggravated in a semi-final loss at Wimbledon.

Nadal continued his incredible first-round record at the U.S. Open, improving to 12-0 in openers in NY. During that stretch, Nadal has won 14 titles, Federer 13, Djokovic 12 and Murray three. Gael Monfils and Marin Cilic were also winners. He's somebody that has been kind of trying to break through as the next generation. But before the injury I was the third in the race and not very far from No. 2.

World number one Djokovic, who needed treatment on a right upper arm injury during his laboured four-set win over Poland's Jerzy Janowicz on Monday, faces Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic.

Djokovic's musical interlude was in some ways a much needed bit of levity for the assembled fans who endured a mostly low-energy match from both players.

When Djokovic completed the Career Slam back in June 2016 by finally winning the French Open crown that had long eluded him, it seemed that his era of dominance was under no serious threat in the near future. Djokovic then pulled out of the event in Cincinnati because of the wrist.

Janowicz, on the other hand, has yet to win an ATP-level match this year.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC OVERCAME an arm injury to beat Jerzy Janowicz in four sets in the US Open first round - and he celebrated in the most popular way possible.

"That's my feeling and I can understand some players that are a little bit older and they made a decision to not go because they have been there". Tomorrow is a new day.

"It was overall a good performance". "I need to have the confidence again with my wrist". Asked to sum up his physical condition, he said: "It's getting better and better each day".

They arrive in NY, however, in very different veins of form, Murray on a high after winning Wimbledon and an Olympic gold medal, while Djokovic is struggling for fitness and confidence following early exits in both tournaments. By the way, the most important thing. I like playing there, especially with the roof construction. "But I am in the way".

Opening the first night session of the tournament, Djokovic and Janowicz had to wait for the conclusion of a lavish ceremony to unveil the stadium's new U.S. dollars 150million roof, before it was their turn to play.

"There is no wind", Nadal said. "I can't say enough about Frances". News stories displayed here appear in our category for Sports and are licensed via a specific agreement between and The Associated Press, the world's oldest and largest news organization.

"So I think even without [Federer], it's a very strong field".

Puig, who became the first person from her country to win the gold medal when she upset Angelique Kerber in the final in Rio, went down to China's Zheng Saisai, who had beaten Agnieszka Radwanska in the first round of the same tournament.
