Manchester United lifted a trophy following Jose Mourinho's first competitive match as manager and, naturally, the boss as delighted with his players at Wembley Stadium. "Everyone is happy in the end".

That said, Mata will still feel disenfranchised by the whole affair, but with Mourinho's backing earlier on in the summer, the Spaniard has multiple opportunities ahead of him. Lingard opened the scoring in the first half, before Jamie Vardy latched on to an very bad backpass from Marouane Fellaini to equalise.

Jesse Lingered opened the scoring for United with a fine individual goal in the 32nd minute before Jamie Vardy levelled 20 minutes prior to Ibrahimovic's headed victor in the 83rd minute.

But it was left to debutant Ibrahimovic to steal the show with an 83rd-minute header and deliver United their first trophy under Mourinho.

However, it was Lingard, whose sublime volley settled the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace in May, who opened the scoring when he slalomed past a quartet of attempted challenges before firing a low shot beyond Schmeichel.

Ibrahimovic shared a picture of himself holding the Community Shield with the simple caption, "Nr 31", to signify how many trophies he's won during his career.

Mourinho also exchanged words with Juan Mata after the midfielder was substituted in stoppage-time, having only come on in the 63rd minute for Jesse Lingard.

"I have to thank Mr Van Gaal because without the victory in the FA Cup we wouldn't be here today so I am getting a trophy for the club and the boys and the fans and myself but I'm playing this match not because I won the FA Cup, I play this match because Mr Van Gaal won the FA Cup so congratulations to him because he's part of this". United are the record holders of the shield, winning the trophy 21 times since 1908.

"It feels good", said Ibrahimovic after the traditional curtain-raiser to the English season. Our team has something big going on, it's a good start.

"I'm very pleased with our performance", said Ranieri. "The only one I can compare it to is Milan". "We begin with a trophy". He gave me exactly what I needed.
