Jon Gray, 24, is the Rockies' stocky right-hander and purported ace with an electric fastball and a killer slider (usually). Howard smashed a grand slam off Gray as the Phillies notched a 10-6 victory.

"That was a big-time game for him tonight", Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.

Ryan Howard helped bring back fond memories for the Philadelphia faithful hitting his franchise record 14th career grand slam in the fifth inning as Thome stood and cheered.

Thompson accomplished a rare feat when he recorded four strikeouts in one inning, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to have four strikeouts in an inning since Doc White did it against Brooklyn in the fifth inning on July 21, 1902. "It was in, but down. It probably wasn't smart for me".

Colorado Rockies' Charlie Blackmon, right, celebrates with third base coach Stu cole after hitting a solo home run in the ninth inning of a baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia took a 3-1 lead. The line drive traveled 439 feet, bouncing off the AT&T sign hanging off the second deck.

DJ LeMahieu went back-to-back with Blackmon in the ninth to cap the scoring.

"I was just feeling pretty good today", Blackmon said. "I can imagine that's what it's like to be Nolan Arenado on a day-to-day basis".

"I know you're not going to get a hit every game, " Dahl said.

Howard's heroics shouldn't come as a surprise. In 66 games against the Rockies, he has hit 14 home runs and driven in 60 runs.

What was surprising was Gray's second consecutive poor start.

All three of Thompson's runs were earned but scored on just two hits. He struck out six but also walked four in 4L innings.

"I'm going to do everything I can to be that guy again", he said. "I just have to be ready to play tomorrow". The veteran slugger, who received a curtain call after the hit, tied Rocky Colavito for 76th place all-time in major league history with his 374th homer. The Phillies recalled lefty Adam Morgan from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make his first start since serving up three homers in an 11-2 loss at Colorado on July 7.TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), CSN PhiladelphiaPITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Tyler Chatwood (10-7, 3.58 ERA) vs. Phillies LH Adam Morgan (1-7, 6.65) Although he did not factor in the decision, Chatwood is coming off a stellar outing versus Texas, recording a season-high eight strikeouts while permitting two runs over 6 2/3 innings.
