Douglas finished just 0.476 behind Raisman - both member's of the 2012 London gold-medal winning United States team.

On an evening where they had to be practically flawless to keep pace with the world's best gymnasts, the men of USA Gymnastics either had too much power, or not enough, when it counted. This that loaded. Raisman will compete in the same three events.

Because of a limit of two athletes in the individual finals only Raisman will join Biles in the all-around final later this week. Ashton Locklear, Ragan Smith and MyKayla Skinner are the alternates if any of the five suffer any injuries.

Raisman was in the all-around final with a 60.607 score. "She's a rock star in training, never makes a bobble, and she wanted to hit it".

Raisman has been vocal that her comeback was, in large part, motivated by her desire to get the all-around medal she was denied back in 2012. Biles has won 14 world medals (10 gold, two silver, two bronze), the most for a USA female gymnast. "I've been on both sides of it", said Raisman, who was the odd woman out at world championships past year where Douglas won silver behind Biles.

At the vault, Simone Biles nailed it for a score of 16.1. Theoretically, that shouldn't be an issue.

We didn't let the pressure of the Olympics get to us, today we made everyone proud.

In fact, every single member of the team earn a spot in an apparatus final, as Biles proudly noted in the mixed zone after the competition. Her double-twisting Yurchenko vault - basically a roundoff onto the block followed by a pair of twists - put the machine in motion.

To see if she really is as good as everyone says she is, to see if she really does leap further from the floor and whether she has the aura of a superstar. "I'm pretty pleased with everything overall, and I'm still rejoicing because there's nothing to be ashamed about".

"I pride normally being very tough", Karolyi said. I'm not alone; my family is with me when I'm out there competing. And I do believe in myself.

When Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and the rest of the Fierce Five won gold in London, it was decisive: at the end of their golden night, they had outscored silver medalists Russian Federation by over five points. Comaneci did it in 1980 after winning gold in 1976. The top 24 finishers advance to the all-around finals and the American team is so dominant that if not for the rule the entire five-person team would probably advance.

"I keep getting that question", said Gabby Douglas, the 2012 Olympic all-around champion.

Beyond Biles, Team USA is loaded with talent and they are expected to dominate team competition. She's also the captain.

But the Summer Olympics have a way of refueling excitement in the sport, especially when the United States is doing well - 10 medals, two gold in 2008 and six medals, three gold in 2012.

"We thank everyone for all the support", Raisman said. "The team, we just calm it down". And yet, they still finished with the three highest individual scores, with Biles, Raisman and Douglas going 1-2-3.

Scoring 15.633 to qualify first on the balance beam, U.S.' Simone wow-ed the crowd in the qualification round and resulted in a standing ovation. "I was like, 'Whoa!'" Unlike the other seven, the Americans didn't slip off uneven bars.

For the dozens of young gymnasts who are victims of abuse, doing so would take on more meaning than any amount of gold medals ever could. "Simone is doing gymnastics because she wants to prove to the world how good she is".

"The girls were so prepared, not just physically but mentally", said Biles' coach, Aimee Boorman.
