Canada on Friday (Aug 12) confirmed its first case of a birth defect related to the mosquito-borne Zika virus.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said in a statement that the baby showed "severe neurological congenital anomalies".

Rius said 90 people have been hospitalized because of the virus.

As of Thursday, there have been 205 confirmed cases of travel-related Zika infections in Canada and two cases of sexual transmission. CDC has confirmed a US case of Zika virus infection in a non-traveler after the person's sexual partner returned from an affected country and developed symptoms.

Zika virus is primarily transmitted through a mosquito bite, and there is no indication that it can spread from person to person through casual contact.

Pregnant women who live in or travel to an area with active Zika virus transmission, or who have sex with a partner who lives in or traveled to an area with active Zika virus transmission without using condoms or other barrier methods to prevent infection should be assessed for Zika virus exposure during each prenatal care visit and tested according to CDC guidance.

State health officials are also working closely with local officials and the healthcare community throughout Louisiana to educate and implement prevention strategies against the local spread of the Zika virus.

"Women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant should check if their travel destination is affected by Zika virus and may need to consider postponing their plans", Murphy said. Mosquitos transmitting Zika have recently been found in a part of Miami, Fla., prompting Canada's public health agency to warn pregnant women to avoid travelling there.

Use an EPA-approved insect repellent. This means people planning to go there should practice enhanced precautions.

Once a week or after every rainfall, empty standing water from any containers around your home, especially in small containers.
