Conservative Group Says Emails Suggest Special Access for Clinton Donors

The more reasonable critics say that the Clintons leveraged heading the State Department for donations.

In June 2009, Doug Band, a longtime aide to former President Bill Clinton and a Clinton Foundation official, contacted Abedin to set up a meeting between Clinton and Bahrain Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad al Khalifa, a donor who, via the foundation, started a leadership scholarship in Bahrain.

"State has not yet had the opportunity to complete a review of the documents to determine whether they are agency records or if they are duplicative of documents State has already produced through the Freedom of Information Act", the State Department said in its statement.

The Washington Post said in its editorial that the planned steps unveiled on Monday to rename the foundation, end foreign and corporate donations and have Bill Clinton resign from the board should have happened sooner - before his wife served as secretary of state - and still fall short.

What's not said is that the 85 private sector donors who met or had phone calls with Clinton over a two-year period, according to an Associated Press count, appear to have included people with whom she had valid reason to speak.

"We're trying to do good things", Bill Clinton said Wednesday.

Slate ran an article with the headline "The Clinton Foundation Is Not A Scandal". Chaffetz makes the argument in his letter to Kerry that these revelations further show official State Department resources were "up for sale". Conversely, you might expect, say, the financial industry to be generous while she was a NY senator but not so much while she was Secretary of State.

Trump, Aug. 23: "She said she turned over all of her work-related emails". Asked about it during a congressional hearing, James Comey said there's no proof Clinton ever knew her emails were classified. "I know there's a lot of smoke, and there's no fire", she said in self-defense this week. It's an extraordinary proportion indicating her possible ethics challenges if elected president.

Defending the foundation's mission, Bill Clinton pointed to more than 11.5 million people in more than 70 countries who have gained access to HIV/AIDS drugs at a much lower cost and millions of American students who have healthier food and more physical education options because of the foundation.

"This is an example of pay-to-play politics the American people are sick and exhausted of", Mike Pence, Trump's running mate, told CNN's Jake Tapper Sunday on "State of the Union".

It will take time to make the changes to each of the foundation's affected programs, said Clinton Foundation President Donna Shalala.

To be clear: I have no evidence - none - that Clinton broke any law or did anything intentionally shady. But the questions about emails and the foundation keep piling up, and she is certain to be challenged at the first debate with Trump on September 26.

Under the present rate, a government attorney working on behalf of the State Department notified the AP's lawyers, it will take about four and one-half months - or until December 30 - to release all the remaining schedules through the end of Clinton's term, in February 2013. "The Clinton Foundation must be investigated now". That is the basis for corruption and it matters not what the former secretary of state's intentions were.

The MAC AIDS fund donated between $5 million and $10 million to the Clinton Foundation and several million more in commitments to programs through the Clinton Global Initiative.
