Many film critics have noted that the actor's presence in Star Trek Beyond is at the very least distracting, if not a sobering element for a summer blockbuster.

In the wake of the news, the hard question of what to do with Yelchin's Chekov will now need to be asked.

It is the third film in the revamped franchise which also stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto. Abrams directed the first two reboot films, and Justin Lin has helmed Beyond.

With a fourth film recently confirmed by producer JJ Abrams, the series' former director has now confirmed that Yelchin's role of Pavel Chekov won't be recast for the new film.

In June, Yelchin died in a freak auto accident at the age of 27.

The producer says that his team is still weighing their options.

There's a shadow looming over the Star Trek franchise.

"I would say there's no replacing him", Abrams told The Toronto Sun.

Abrams goes onto admit that killing Chekov off is still a definite possibility.

"I have thought about it, we're working on it, and it's too early to talk about it", he stated.

"We knew going into this movie it would be a bit of a heartbreak just because of Leonard".
