Two suspects were arrested after a man died on New Year's Eve while chasing down a thief who stole his laptop from a Starbucks in Oakland, Calif.

The theft occurred just after 11:30 a.m. inside the Starbucks on the 2000 block of Mountain Boulevard in Montclair.

He grabbed the car's door handle but when the vehicle accelerated, the man's head was slammed into another parked auto, witnesses told police, according to KTLA5.

"When the suspect approached and took the laptop, the victim chased the suspects right around the corner", said Officer Johnna Watson, a spokeswoman for the Oakland Police Department.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspects.

The Oakland Fire Department gave immediate medical attention to the man before he was transported, in critical condition, to a local hospital.

It was unclear if a driver was waiting in the vehicle.

At the time, friends of Deporis told reporters he may have chased after the thieves because he had his music, including an unfinished new album, on his laptop.

Witnesses said they saw the victim attempt to get into the SUV, with one witness claiming the man did a "superman-type dive" into the auto. "His face was purple and blue", Maria Chan, owner of a florist shop in the area, told KGO, describing the victim. "He was a young man".

Police told the DailyMail.com in an emailed statement that: 'Two arrests have been made in connection with this homicide, investigation continues'.

In a response to the Oakland Police Department's Tweet, another local claimed to have had his laptop stolen in a similar manner several weeks ago at the same Starbucks.
