A list of the purported 2019 Ballon d'Or winners has been leaked on social media, and the now viral screenshot shows Barcelona star Lionel Messi as the one topping it having reportedly secured his sixth prize, beating out Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

Messi, 32, beat Liverpool defensive colossus Virgil van Dijk into second place as the accolade for the world's best player was handed out by France Football magazine at a glitzy bash in Paris on Monday night.

The victor for the 2019 edition of the Ballon d'Or will be announced in Paris on Monday night, December 2.

A year ago it was notably Lionel Messi who was excluded from the top 3, while this time, the results might be reversed, as a purported award summary leaked online places the Argentinian ace in the top spot.

Leo Messi's mark on football began in 2009, at least as far as Ballon D'Or awards are concerned.

Lionel Messi won the LaLiga for the second consecutive time in the 2018-19 season and was also the top scorer in the Spanish top-tier league. The awards for 2019 will see a closely contested contest between the world's greatest footballers as 30 candidates from around the world and different leagues have been nominated for the award.

It's the most prestigious individual honour in football - and tonight the Ballon d'Or will be handed over to a new victor. Furthermore, his form at the start of the 2019/20 season propelled the club to the top of the table and into the UEFA Champions League round of sixteen.

The 34-year-old midfielder, the standout player at the June-July tournament, succeeded Norway's Ada Hegerberg who did not take part in the World Cup.

"It's been an incredible year, I was close but unfortunately there are a couple of players like (Messi)".

No other player in World Football has dominated their domestic league as much as Messi has and this makes him a strong contender.

At one point he looked like the favourite, but Messi already pipped him to FIFA's The Best title in September.
