Jurgen Klopp blames temperature for Adrian mistake for Brighton goal

The Brazilian was dismissed on 76 minutes as he raced out of his area to handle an attempted chip by Brighton substitute Leandro Trossard.

Alisson will now miss that derby through suspension.

But he was still lining up his wall when Lewis Dunk took it, passing it into the net meaning his first touch was picking the ball out of the net.

"We brought on a frozen goalkeeper", said Klopp.

"Everybody sitting here is probably not really warm yet, but imagine you go there in shorts, a really thin shirt and some gloves which are not made for keeping you warm".

"Then some people let the free-kick happen like that, like a little bit sleepy".

There was more drama, and anxiety from home supporters dreaming of seeing their team win a first league title in 30 years, in the closing stages.

Still, thanks to van Dijk, who is in contention for the Ballon d'Or award in Paris on Monday, Liverpool had a sufficient cushion to survive.

Liverpool avoided a big late scare with 10 men to hold on for a 2-1 victory over Brighton, stretching their lead to 11 points at the top of the Premier League.

Virgil van Dijk is hoping to beat Lionel Messi to the Ballon d'Or on Monday and showed he can score goals as well as stop them with two towering headers from Trent Alexander-Arnold set-piece deliveries to put Liverpool 2-0 up inside 25 minutes at Anfield.

After Mat Ryan did well to deny Roberto Firmino's low drive from 16 yards, he couldn't keep out Van Dijk's looping header from a deep Alexander-Arnold free-kick from the right.

The Brighton goalkeeper had already made three key saves to keep his side in contention, two from Roberto Firmino and another from Sadio Mane.

Liverpool have also not kept a clean sheet in 12 matches in all competitions, but Klopp is concerned primarily about results.

Brighton reacted well, and should have halved the deficit as Lewis Dunk somehow shinned a shot wide unmarked and onside from eight yards as Liverpool's high line was breached easily. "We were not prepared for that situation so I am completely happy", Klopp said.

The German boss heaped praise on backup goalkeeper Adrián however, who made two crucial late saves to help extend the Reds' incredible lead at the top of the Premier League table.

"I think we are playing the way that is necessary to win", Alisson continued. Leicester plays tomorrow (Sunday) so it could be eight.

"It kept it interesting but in the end the most important thing is we won the game".
