Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew to start vs. Chargers

Given the economics of the National Football League and the quarterback's recent history, it made sense when Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone announced nearly a month ago that he was re-installing Nick Foles as the team's starting quarterback after Foles had recovered from a broken collarbone suffered in the season opener.

When Minshew replaced Foles to start the second half, he did a bit better.

Marrone told the media the decision wasn't an easy one in Monday's media conference call, but in the end it came down to the mobility and elusiveness Minshew brings. Foles played a bad first half, turning the ball over on the team's first three drives (an interception and two fumbles) and then leading the offense to three consecutive three-and-outs. He benched Foles at halftime - after a chorus of boos in his second start at home - and switched back to rookie sensation Gardner Minshew.

"We're not able to give [Foles] a clean pocket", Marrone said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN. At the same time he's got to be ready in case there's an injury or whatever it may be. I think he's a really good quarterback.

In the first half versus the Bucs, the Jags put up just 105 yards of total offense, with 70 net passing yards, five first downs, three turnovers, and put a goose egg on the scoreboard.

The Bears (or any team) that acquired Foles would be handed what is left of a four-year deal worth up to $88 million, which was signed earlier this year. The teams they've beaten the past month - Arizona (3-8-1), Atlanta (3-9) and Jacksonville (4-8) - may sit at the bottom of their divisions, but there's plenty for first-year coach Bruce Arians to be encouraged about moving forward. And with his recent troubles being what they are, I suppose the potential asking price could be less this coming offseason than what it was leading up to the 2019 National Football League trade deadline.

Minshew stepped in for Foles and had an impressive debut: 22 of 25 for 275 yards and two TDs with one interception.
