IPhone 12 Box Contents Could Include AirPods for Apple’s 2020 Launch

We will have to wait until September 2020 to find out whether Apple will actually bundle AirPods along with the iPhone.

According to Taiwanese publication DigiTimes (subscription), Apple is now considering bundling AirPods with next year's iPhones.

The latest and greatest model to date, the AirPods Pro, are even more successful and enjoy such great demand that analysts are predicting a shortage in supplies for Thanksgiving and Christmas season. There is in addition also the background of the last 3 years of falling iPhone sales which suggest next year may not be as fruitful for Apple as 2019, again making a sweetener for buyers important.

San Francisco: Apple is looking to bundle its truly-wireless (TWS) earbuds with the iPhone 12 next year. This would have Apple at least pondering what it might want to do in response, if anything. Apple AirPods is the best selling True Wireless headset in the world. "TWS" or "truly wireless stereo" earphones include the likes of AirPods and Samsung's Galaxy Buds.

On the one hand is the popularity of Apple AirPods. It's hard to imagine Apple including such a costly accessory in the box with new iPhones next year without raising the price of the iPhones overall... not to mention that DigiTimes doesn't have a stellar track record with Apple rumors either. Still, it's hard to imagine how Apple could do this without compromising the quality of its AirPods technology and impacting the perception of, and demand for, its actual standalone AirPods and AirPods Pro, both of which now feel like much more premium products. One likely scenario could be that Apple will end up charging a premium for including the AirPods in the iPhone 12 box contents, but it's not confirmed if this will negatively impact demand for future models. This would be similar to what Apple did this year with the upgraded 18-watt charging adapter and USB-C to Lightning cable, which is also only included with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
