She said she wants senior officials gathered in Madrid to "finally understand the urgency" of climate change and cooperate internationally.

The vessel is carrying Miss Thunberg and her father Svante 3,000 miles to Portugal where she will go onto attend the COP 25 climate change talks in Madrid.

"She has been a leader that has been able to move and open hearts for many young people and many people all over the world", Schmidt told The Associated Press at the summit in Madrid. "If anyone could help me find transport I would be so grateful".

The boat was provided by an Australian couple.

Having used her appearance in NY to denounce governments for failing to act with sufficient urgency on the environment, Thunberg attended weekly green protests in several U.S. cities before embarking on her long trip home.

The yacht, named La Vagabonde, leaves little or no carbon footprint when its sails are up, using solar panels and hydro-generators for electricity. We expect to arrive at Doca de Santo Amaro, Lisbon sometime between 8.00-10.00 tomorrow morning'. We are SO greatly blessed to have you as our warrior angel of climate change, devoting all your time at this time and your life to fighting so hard!

Thunberg's arrival in Lisbon coincides with the release of a bleak report by the Geneva-based World Meteorological Organization.

In a stark reminder that burning fossil fuels has fundamentally changed the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, the report said the concentration of carbon dioxide hit a record 407.8 parts per million in 2018 and rose again in 2019, hovering at the highest levels seen in millions of years.

The two-week gathering kicked off on Monday with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warning that the planet had reached a "point of no return".

Portugal's environment minister Matos Fernandes thanked Greta for her activism in a letter last Thursday, having already departed for COP25.

"We need that tremendous force in order to increase climate action", she said.

"You have stolen my dreams, my childhood, with your empty words and yet I'm one of the lucky ones", Thunberg thundered.

Delegates at the talks aim to finalise groundwork to support the Paris pact to curb the rise in global temperatures, which enters a crucial implementation phase in 2020.
