Comprised of a real banana affixed to the wall with a piece of duct tape, this new work is no different than Cattelan's hyper-realistic sculptures lampooning popular culture and offer a wry commentary on society, power, and authority.

The 59-year-old Cattelan is something an art-world provocateur.

I'm talking, of course, about the banana that you see in the image above. The unusual installation was by an Italian artist, Maurizio Cattelan who named his artwork "Comedian". You might be familiar with the gold toilet he made a while back.

A piece of art that sold for $120,000 at a Florida gallery this week is drawing attention due to being a banana duct taped to a wall.

So what if a crafty collector dug through the trash for the final unsold edition of the banana or, worse, tried to steal the fruit while visiting the gallery's pop-up at the annual art fair?

However, he did elaborate a little further on the exorbitantly priced produce, describing bananas as a "a symbol of global trade, a double entendre, as well as a classic device for humor." .

"Maurizio takes mundane objects and transforms them into vehicles of both delight and critique".

"Potential buyers should note there are no clear instructions about what to do if the bananas start to decompose", CNN reported.

That's over R1,7 million for a piece of fruit and some tape, and the third edition could sell for above R2 million. Presented by Perrotin, a contemporary art gallery founded in Paris, the "Comedian" comes in editions of three, out of which two have already been sold. He also made several variations including one in resin, then in bronze before he eventually settled on the natural banana as a centerpiece, according to Galerie Perrotin.

"Wherever I was travelling, I had this banana on the wall". I couldn't figure out how to finish it.

"In the end, one day I woke up and I said, 'The banana is supposed to be a banana.'" Indeed.

The banana artwork which was sold for a whopping amount has received some hilarious reactions online.
