Elizabeth Graham, owner of Forever Beautiful Salon and Spa, says when you shop local you help the owners in your community put food on the table for their family.

Dave Price, the director of the Oregon Coast Community College Small Business Development Center, urged people on this Small Business Saturday to "reach out to our friends and neighbors who are on their phones or laptops, where they could be tempted to shop online, and instead remind them of all the great reasons to start their shopping right here, locally, with some of their local retailers, restaurants and attractions".

"Everyone today is at the big box stores but tomorrow is just for us", she said.

There are a lot of different Small Business Saturday deals going on in downtown Harrisonburg.

American Express says for every dollar spent at a small business in the USA, 67¢ goes back directly into the local economy.

"We are part of the community", said Lisa LaRue, owner of Heart of Carolina. Admittedly, the "holiday" is contrived, having been created by American Express in 2010.

"We are full of Christmas gifts, and this really kicks off that season for us", Nick said. When a store profits, we all benefit together. Hoping to avoid Black Friday crowds and support local brick-and-mortar stores in your community?

Without these local, independent businesses, those whom they employ, just as we who live in Carteret County and other counties where local, independent businesses exist and thrive, would be the poorer.

Whether one shops in downtown or uptown Morehead City or Beaufort, Newport, or on Bogue Banks please shop locally.

The Temple Chamber of Commerce is a big supporter of small businesses year round, Rod Henry the President of the Chamber says he's seeing more and more businesses as their downtown area continues to grow.

Getting a good laugh when you're out shopping can certainly help ease the stress of the holiday rush, but when you shop local, you're also helping the local economy, and that may be why Small Business Saturday is gaining in popularity.
