Graham: Impeachment inquiry is 'invalid' without whistleblower's testimony

Some Republicans, meanwhile, focused on the process of the impeachment inquiry rather than on the substance of the allegations against Trump.

House Republicans released their request for witnesses on Saturday, including Hunter Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, an individual referred to as "the anonymous whistleblower, "senior diplomat Kurt Volker, Tim Morrison, the senior director for Europe and Russian Federation on the White House National Security Council, and Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale".

Interested in Impeachment Inquiry? Ukrainian officials say Hunter Biden is not suspected of any wrongdoing.

Intelligence Committee Ranking Republican Devin Nunes sent an embarrassingly facetious threat with the GOP's request.

Rep Nunes wrote that Republicans were calling the witnesses to testify in an open setting to "provide transparency to your otherwise opaque and unfair process".

"This inquiry is not, and will not serve, however, as a vehicle to undertake the same sham investigations into the Bidens", said Mr. Schiff, "or 2016 that the President pressed Ukraine to conduct for his personal political benefit or to facilitate the President's effort to threaten, intimidate, and retaliate against the whistleblower who courageously raised the initial alarm". "That's their impression", Johnson said of the officials who painted a picture of Trump improperly pressing Zelensky to go after the Bidens.

Mr Trump has pushed an unproven accusation that then-Vice President Biden improperly tried to help his son by pressuring the Ukrainian government to fire the country's prosecutor general.

The Biden presidential campaign declined to comment to CNN Saturday on the request for the former vice president's son to testify.

Joe Biden was asked Friday (local time) in New Hampshire whether he himself would testify at a Senate impeachment trial if asked - though Republicans have not yet made that request.

With public hearings set to begin next week, we can expect more of the same from the president's defenders.

"[I] t's impossible to bring this case forward, in my view, fairly without us knowing who the whistle-blower is, and having a chance to cross-examine them about any biases that they may have", Graham explained.

"I recommend that Nervous Nancy Pelosi (who backed up Schiff's lie), Shifty Adam Schiff, Sleepy Joe Biden, the Whistleblower (who miraculously disappeared after I released the transcript of the call), the 2nd Whistleblower (who also disappeared), & the I.G., be part of the list!" the president tweeted.
