Firefighters in Australia are now battling hundreds of wildfires, with at least nine emergency-level fires, after a "catastrophic" day of no rain.


"I have to confess to being hugely relieved this morning that yesterday our unbelievable volunteers and emergency service personnel withstood the catastrophic conditions and did manage to save life and property", Ms Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

A cool change on Wednesday brought relief for firefighters battling massive bushfires in eastern Australia which destroyed 50 homes and saw flames come within metres of homes on the outskirts of Sydney.

"This will only worsen throughout the afternoon as the weather conditions continue to deteriorate, and particularly those strong winds strengthen", he said.

The armed forces are still standing by to provide support, including for search and rescue operations and other logistical duties.

The Academy Award-winning actor owns a 400-hectare property in Nana Glen - one of the emergency zones.
