Tsitsipas downs Djokovic in Shanghai, qualifies for ATP Finals

It is a mark of how disappointing a year this has been for Zverev that his quarter-final victory over Roger Federer on Friday was the first time in 2019 that he had beaten another player in the top ten.

Rafael Nadal has been absent from the Shanghai Masters but is guaranteed to recapture the world number one spot next month after Novak Djokovic went down to a shock quarter final defeat in China. And it comes just six weeks after he became the first Italian in 44 years to reach the semi-finals of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

A handicap line can be considered, but given Tsitsipas' propensity to play tight sets, it would be much more risky than simply the match win position on Medvedev here.

Zverev is the slight odds-on favourite to win this match at 9/13, whilst Berrettini is priced at 11/8. As I said, I didn't make him defend, you know, I guess enough.

Prior to Friday's match, Fognini said Medvedev was one of the most risky players to face.

"I usually don't like to do it, to break the rackets, because it's never attractive", Medvedev said. The 38-year-old Swiss served an ace to force a third set, during which he was penalised in the fourth game for twice hitting the ball out the court in anger.

But he said that past meetings with Medvedev stood for nothing because the Russian has improved markedly since their last match, in 2018.

"I don't know when it's going to come".

Zverev boosted his hopes of reaching the ATP Finals by reaching his first championship match since May and a first Masters final of 2019.

One of 26 unforced errors from Djokovic gave Tsitsipas, who produced an array of searing backhand and forehand winners, three break points and he grasped the opportunity to take a 3-1 lead in the third before going on to seal his place in the penultimate round.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer saved five set points in the first set as he scrambled to a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win over 13th-seeded David Goffin and advanced to the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals.

The victory helped Zverev climb to seventh with 2,855 points in the race, 330 points more than eighth-placed Berrettini.

Zverev, who had 11 aces, said: "It feels great, obviously".

"(Or) maybe in the following year, but in the next two years, I think 100 percent". I felt like I've played some decent tennis this week and being in a Masters 1000 final here in Shanghai is also something very special for me.
