Rip Taylor, the madcap mustached comedian with a fondness for confetti-throwing who became a television game show mainstay in the 1970s, has died.

Taylor died at 1:59 p.m., longtime Hollywood publicist Harlan Boll said.

Taylor brought his talents to Broadway, as well, touring in productions like Peter Pan and Oliver. He was known for his exuberant personality.

"I sat on a stool telling jokes, and nobody was laughing", he told UPI in 1992.

Taylor was known for his over-the-top delivery and penchant for confetti showers. "He couldn't read the cue card and I pulled a hair from my nose and tears came down and they pushed me on and he says, "The Crying Comedian" and that's how that happened", Taylor said.

He was also a frequent guest on The Merv Griffin Show, The Tonight Show and Late Night With David Letterman.

Taylor made a name for himself, and a career, in the 70s and 80s making amusing, bizarre, out-of-control appearances on every talk show of the day, CBS Los Angeles reports. "He was a popular game show panelist, appearing often during the heyday of the genre on "The Hollywood Squares" and "Match Game" and hosted the "$1.98 Beauty Show".

Born Charles Taylor in Washington, D.C., he got his start as a stand-up comic playing clubs in the Catskills after he'd served in the Army during the Korean War.

Each episode of the show, which aired from 1978 to 1980, would end with Taylor offering a bouquet of rotten vegetables and $1.98 in coins to the victor while saying, "You win the prize, you take the cake". He was also a headliner in Las Vegas.

Taylor also had a lengthy voiceover resume, which boasted episodes (and various TV-movies) of such iconic properties as The Addams Family, DuckTales, The Flintstones, Garfield, The Jetsons, Popeye and Scooby Doo. He was apparently so proud of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that he'd regularly schedule trips to buff and clean the square at 6625 Hollywood Boulevard.

"Rip is amusing because he's insane".
