"The opportunities afforded this guy from small-town MS have been many", Smith said in his last monologue on Friday.

His final edition of of Shepard Smith Reporting aired Friday afternoon.

What surprises you more: Smith's exit, or the fact that he stuck it out for 23 years?

Smith said he "won't be reporting elsewhere, at least in the near future", under his agreement with Fox News. "And then we'll see what comes along". CNN anchor Chris Cuomo tweeted.

"Is he leaving? Oh that's a shame!" the president said to reporters. "Following that - who knows - he is not retiring".

A source familiar with Smith's negotiations said the anchor informed Fox News well before the Barr meeting that he wanted to leave.

Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the United States media as "the enemy of the people", has lashed out publicly against Shepard.

"He had the worst ratings on Fox, so there's a reason, why is Shepard Smith leaving?" he asked.

"Who can fill that role?" another Fox employee asked.

"After requesting that I stay, they graciously obliged", Smith said.

Smith was no exception to the feud between opinion and news.

Besides Trump, Smith, whose show was part of the network's straight news division as opposed to the opinion-driven primetime lineup, also butted heads with Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, two pro-Trump hosts with the two top-rated shows on Fox News. Carlson ultimately deemed Smith a "partisan." . (Actually, Smith averaged 1.3 million total viewers at 3 p.m. and topped his cable news competitors). I didn't say Texas at the time, just lower Manhattan. Wow.

"Even in our now polarized nation, it's my hope that the facts will win the day".

The announcement was abrupt and appeared to shock Smith's colleagues, including Neil Covuto and John Roberts. Cavuto opened his program telling his audience, "Like you, I'm a little stunned and a little heartbroken".

Stelter and Burnett commended Smith as someone who kept "consistently rebutting the president's lies". Trump regularly returned fire by attacking Smith on his Twitter feed, including as recently as Thursday.
