Trump said he called off plans for secret peace talks with the Taliban at Camp David, Maryland last Sunday when he learned that a Taliban-claimed suicide attack had killed 12 in Kabul, including a US service member.

A USA serviceman was killed by a Taliban auto bomb on Thursday, which Trump cited as the catalyst for the abrupt end to talks.

US President Donald Trump ended the negotiations as they were reported to be on the verge of a conclusion citing Taliban attacks that killed US military personnel.

A US- led invasion of Afghanistan shortly after the 2001 attack toppled the Taliban, who had harboured Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader and attacks mastermind.

India supports direct talks between the elected Afghan leadership and the Taliban to end the violence there, he said.

As part of the proposed deal, the USA would withdraw 5,400 troops from Afghanistan within 20 weeks.

The US and the Taliban have for almost a year been attempting to negotiate a peace deal that would ensure the withdrawal of foreign troops in exchange for the movement's guarantee that the country will not become a safe haven for terrorists. "No enemy on earth can match the overwhelming strength skill and might of the American armed forces", the president said.

The announcement angered some, coming so close to the 11 September 2001 anniversary.

Relatives of victims, survivors, police officers, firefighters and city leaders held a ceremony on Wednesday at Ground Zero where hijacked Al-Qaeda planes brought down the Twin Towers.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, which he said killed more than 200 commandos.

In what has become an annual tradition, relatives read out the long list of those who were killed, saying a few words about each victim, in a ceremony that took nearly four hours.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and his predecessors Michael Bloomberg and Rudy Giuliani were among those who attended.

More have died since from illnesses related to the destruction. During his speech, he also explained why he cancelled his peace talks with the Taliban.
