The eighth-seeded Medvedev needed just under 57 minutes to finish off the No. 2 seed from Austria at the US$5.7-million ATP Tour Masters 1000 series event.

Two-time Roland Garros finalist Thiem, who had never won a match in Canada over five years of trying before this week, said he did not have a chance against Medvedev as a hectic travel schedule caught up with him in his 56-minute loss.

It was Medvedev's first win over Thiem in three career matches.

The other semi-final will pit the winners of two matches to be played Friday night: Spanish world No. 2 Rafael Nadal against Italian world No. 11 Fabio Fognini and Frenchman Gael Monfils versus Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.

The second set began in similar fashion, with Medvedev notching two more service breaks and clinching the victory with one final service hold.

"I've really had a great transition from good confidence in the European summer".

Fognini beat Nadal in their last meeting in the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals.

This promises to be one of the more closely fought quarter-finals in the current lineup.

"I had been playing probably a little bit better than him, but the score was against me". I heard a lot about it that there were good food and stuff but never saw it. "I was not on my 100 per cent", he said.

Medvedev and Khachanov are both 23 years old and grew up together in Moscow, but they have only played each other once on the ATP Tour.

The sixth-seeded Khachanov, who downed hometown favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime on Thursday to advance, also made quick work of Zverev and should be equally well-rested for Saturday's semifinal.

Zverev, the third seed and No. 7 player in the world, slammed his racket in frustration in the first set, which elicited a negative reaction from the crowd.

Khachanov, ranked No. 8, blasted a tennis ball out of the venue during Thursday's win over Auger-Aliassime, leading to loud boos.

In June, Khachanov became the first Russian to be ranked in the top-10 since Mikhail Youzhny in February 2011, and Medvedev joined him last month.

He went on to win the event, his third of four career titles.

Third seed Alexander Zverev of Germany will face Khachanov in the quarters after a 7-5 5-7 7-6 (5) win over Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili.

"We had one match previous year in Moscow and it was very tough", said Khachanov.
