A Sussex Police report mentioned a "hazardous material incident" that occurred in Worthing on the same day.

They have both since been discharged, and advised to go home, wash their clothes and have a shower, the spokesman added. "The investigation is ongoing and we will release more information as soon as we are able to", the police said.

Residents and people staying in the area were told to stay indoors and close all doors and windows.

A number of people on Twitter said they were evacuated from the seafront in the Sussex resort, including around the pier.

Part of Worthing Pier has been evacuated after a suspected chemical spill has left people vomiting and and suffering from burning eyes.

Kitesurfing instructor Christine Johnston told Sky News that she was at her surf ship when two beach patrol officers approached her with their faces covered and told her to leave immediately. "It was quite weird and sounded really dramatic - we've canceled all our lessons for the rest of the day".

A two-mile cordon has been set up on Worthing seafront.

Sussex Police later said all the cordons had been lifted and the seafront was open as usual.

A Worthing Fire Station tweet, just before 2pm, said: "Emergency services are now responding to a hazardous material incident in Worthing".
