Pep Guardiola says VAR decisions could do with ‘a little more consistency’

"Sergio was upset because he thought I blamed him for their second equaliser", the City manager said. "It was a one versus one movement".

"I think he still needs to improve". "They were better than us, they dominated the game", the Spurs manager said.

City will bemoan their luck and lacklustre defending that allowed Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura to cancel out goals from Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero with Spurs' only two efforts on target.

Pep Guardiola has seen last-minute Manchester City winners chalked off against Tottenham before, and said Gabriel Jesus's disallowed stoppage-time goal was like deja vu of the VAR experience in their Champions League quarter-final in April.

It was more VAR misery for City against Spurs after they were knocked out of last season's Champions League thanks to a Fernando Llorente goal that was given and a late Sterling strike that was ruled out by the television ref.

In the first half City, could also have easily been given a penalty when Lamela appeared to drag Rodri down in the Spurs box.

"You have an fantastic opportunity when you play and you feel the excitement, but when you feel the responsibility 200% when you're first choice and we'll see how he deals with that".

"But always we have to live with the decision in these situations".

Spurs will be looking to get a lot closer to the Citizens over the course of the Premier League this term, and they could make big inroads into the gap they need to close, if they come out on top at the Etihad Stadium.

Mauricio Pochettino's men finished 27 points behind City last season, on Saturday 27 was the difference in the shot count as Tottenham mustered three to the hosts' 30. When people say you can do better - better than this I don't know if it is possible. Tottenham created two chances and nothing else but unfortunately for us they scored them both.

"We played better today than the second best team in Europe".

"If we continue in that way and play in that way we don't have regrets and that's the most important thing".
