Chung, 32, has been a part of three Super Bowl-winning teams with the Patriots, including last year's squad.

Chung knowingly possessed cocaine on (June) 25 in Meredith, N.H., where he owns a home. Chung has not appeared in either of the Patriots' first two preseason games.

The Laconia Sun tried to contact Belknap County Attorney Andrew Livernois, who is prosecuting the case.

Chung will be arraigned for the charge on August 28 at Belknap Superior Court in Laconia, per Mortensen.

The Patriots issued a statement saying they were aware of the reports but would not comment further while "judicial proceedings take place".

"Chung did possess or have under his control a quantity of the controlled drug cocaine", court documents said.

Neither the National Football League nor the Patriots have announced potential discipline for Chung, though New England did release a statement on Thursday afternoon.

Chung reportedly will be arraigned next Wednesday.

In April, Chung signed a one-year contract extension through 2021.

Chung was drafted by the Patriots in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
