Matsuyama was at 12-under 132, one shot ahead of Patrick Cantlay (67) and Tony Finau (66). He carded two more birdies on his opening nine, however, bringing him to one-under at the turn.

Brandt Snedeker made two fantastic chip shots for birdies on par-3 holes, holing out a 35-yarder from deep rough at 13 and blasting out of a greenside bunker from 60 feet and rolling the ball into the cup at 17.

Thomas started the day with a six-shot advantage but when he bogeyed the 10th hole, after nearly hitting his second out of bounds, the lead over Cantlay was down to two.

His felt his best shot was the next hole, a 9-iron from forward tees to a front pin over the water to 6 feet for his eighth birdie of a remarkable round. The two finished in second and third, respectively.

Listowel golfer Corey Conners is in position for another Top 10 finish, this time at the PGA's BMW Championship just outside of Chicago.

He made three birdies in his first seven holes and looked ready to make a charge, but the round stalled considerably after then and he did not manabe another birdie for the rest of the round.

Earlier in the season Conners picked up his first PGA Tour victory, winning the Valero Texas Open.

Two-time FedEx Cup champion Woods climbed the leaderboard thanks a to a bogey-free 67, which left him in a tie for 31st.

After a pair of rough opening rounds in Medinah, Woods rallied on Saturday.

"It was a little bit frustrating. It's a very humbling and tough game and I learned to respect it and be patient". "I didn't really - it's not like I made any long putts, I just hit it close to the hole and took advantage of some opportunities when I had them and got a couple good breaks".

The perks of the Tour Championship include a chase for a $15 million top prize, along with a spot in all the majors next year. "If I just keep playing how I've been playing I feel like I can shoot another good round". He has a clear path to his first victory in a year, and it would give him the FedEx Cup lead going into the Tour Championship at East Lake.

Woods said after the round that the only official event he will play in the rest of 2019 will be the inaugural Zozo Championship in Japan, which begins October 4.
