Box Office Pro predicted Hobbs & Shaw would lead with $29 million, followed by Dora at $22 million and Lion King at $20.8 million. Sadly, Hobbs and Shaw failed to impress Fast and Furious fans in India and the film saw a dip at the ticket windows during the weekdays.

Released by Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures, Dora took in $17 million (U.S.) in North American theatres this weekend, researcher Comscore Inc. estimated on Sunday. Internationally the film brought in $60.8 million for an global total of $224 million and a worldwide total of $332 million.

In the number two slot, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark scared up a $20.8 million debut.

It as also got good reviews from critics and audiences, who gave it an A CinemaScore.

Quentin Tarantino's latest film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood fell into fifth place, with another $11.6 million domestically, crossing the $100 million mark domestically, making it his fourth film to gross that threshold (Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds, Pulp Fiction).

The crowded field made it tougher for the other new releases, including The Art of Racing in the Rain from Disney's Fox division, The Kitchen from AT&T Inc.'s Warner Bros., and Bleecker Street Media's Brian Banks. Based on an obscure Vertigo comic, the film from first time director Andrea Berloff (an Oscar-nominated screenwriter) features both McCarthy and Haddish in more dramatic roles. Forecasts for the film, which cost $49 million to make, ranged from $20.5 million to $22 million.

"I think that the filmmakers took a very bold approach to their choice with the movie and I think it just didn't resonate with the viewers", Goldstein said.

Interestingly, audiences seem to be ignoring brand new movies and narratives altogether, and instead, watching remakes and live-adaptions of classic series and pre-established brands, such as Disney's The Lion King.

Viewership at the movies is down 6.3% this year.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
