Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, the state where some of Epstein's alleged sexual abuse crimes took place, suggested the possibility that others might have been involved in Epstein's death when he called on corrections officials to explain what happened at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.

In a brief statement on the night of August 11, Barbara Sampson, the city's chief medical examiner, said that Dr. Michael Baden observed the autopsy examination, reported the New York Daily News.

Attorney Jack Scarola represents some of Epstein's victims. "This is routine practice", she said, adding that federal prosecutors were aware of Baden's attendance.

Correctional officers at the New York City prison housing Jeffrey Epstein didn't check in on him for hours leading up to his apparent suicide on Saturday after his cellmate was transferred for reasons that were not immediately clear, according to a report.

Epstein's body was found in his cell around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, and he was pronounced dead from cardiac arrest after being taken to the hospital. Interest in the case was high due to Epstein's connections to politicians, businessmen, and celebrities, including U.S. President Donald Trump, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Britain's Prince Andrew, and former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. An official with knowledge of the investigation told the paper that the Justice Department was told Epstein would have a cellmate and be monitored by a guard every 30 minutes. Neither officials nor Epstein's legal team would comment on whether those procedures were followed, but at least one official familiar with the episode said that they were not.

The preliminary finding was suicide, and no signs of foul play were found, according to initial reports. He says he is skeptical about the circumstances surrounding Epstein's death.

A law enforcement source also told the Times he was alone in his cell early Saturday after his cellmate was transferred.

The cameras are set up to capture who goes in or out of the cell, but they do not point inside.

Epstein, 66, had been denied bail and faced up to 45 years behind bars on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges unsealed last month. He had pleaded not guilty and was awaiting trial.

Attorney General William Barr said his death raised "serious questions" and announced that both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and inspector general would look into it.

I was appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead early this morning from an apparent suicide while in federal custody.

After Epstein's first suicide attempt, his cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, 51, a former NY police officer in jail and facing the death penalty for allegedly kidnapping and killing four men, was questioned in regards to the incident.
