Police said multiple people were shot, but the total number of victims was not immediately clear.

A garlic festival at Christmas Hill Park was wrapping up at about 5:30 p.m. local time when the reports began. Police said the site about 80 miles south of San Francisco remains active.

No further details, including any information about a suspect or suspects, have been confirmed.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center spokeswoman Joy Alexiou said the hospital had received two victims from the shooting and was expecting three more.

At least three people were killed and around a dozen others injured in a mass shooting Sunday night at one of America's biggest food festivals, Gilroy city councilman Dion Bracco says.

Another witness, Tony Porrovecchio, tells the Mercury News, "At first I thought some idiot was setting off fireworks, but then we saw him".

"He definitely was prepared for what he was doing", she said.

Once they heard the gunfire stop, Contreras and Camargo each made a run for the entrance, eventually reuniting in the parking lot. Organizers said almost 100,000 people attend the event each year. He was saying, 'Just go! "People started screaming and running, I instinctively did the same. It was complete pandemonium". "Who'd shoot up a garlic festival?"

Social media videos showed panic amid a chaotic scene.

Another person also captured video of people running.

The band Tin Man was just starting an encore when shots rang out.

Paramedics and police are now on the scene. Fire trucks and ambulances were parked near the festival grounds.
