Shannen Doherty, Luke's longtime friend and Beverly Hills 90210 co-star, will guest star in the season 4 premiere, according to Us Weekly.

Since his tragic death, the show has been contemplating numerous ways to honor the fallen star.

Aguirre-Sacasa also told the crowd that Perry had discussed inviting his Beverly Hills, 90210 castmate and friend Doherty to join the Riverdale cast.

"They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible", said Aguirre-Sacasa.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Riverdale's stars revealed a key update on Season 4: unusual "flashbacks" that might show what's to come for the squad, Entertainment Weekly reported. "I remember when Luke auditioned, he came up to me and said, 'I loved this script and when I read the character Fred, I liked him because he is just like me". He'll recur throughout the season, making his first appearance in episode two, "Fast Times at Riverdale High".

Aguirre-Sacasa did say that prior to Perry's passing, they had previously discussed introducing Doherty into the series.

"She helps Archie process what happened to his father". At the time, Doherty expressed that she was "struggling with this loss" and that "processing (it) is impossible".

Although the Riverdale stars were all smiles in their first back-to-work selfie earlier this month, the showrunner confessed that it's been a trying time on set. It's a really emotional episode; it's a tear-jerker. "We really wanted to honor Luke, to honor Fred and we wanted it to be a standalone, really emotional, really focused on what this character meant to this group of people". She won't be the only fresh face on Riverdale's upcoming season, though: The Fosters star Kerr Smith will take on the role of Mr.

Along with her social media post, Doherty joining the cast for the one special episode was announced during the Riverdale panel at Comic-Con.

Airing on October 9, the episode will reflect on Luke Perry's long-lasting legacy, which should be an interesting thing to behold, all things considered.
