Arguing that Ryan approached his relationship with Trump poorly, Scarborough said Friday that Ryan should've spoken out sooner.

The Wisconsin lawmaker had been criticizing Trump's behavior in the White House while speaking with Alberta - chief political correspondent for Politico Magazine - for his new book, "American Carnage".

Late on Thursday, Trump swung back at the former speaker.

US President Donald Trump unloaded via Twitter on former GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan, calling him a "lame duck failure.' Ryan is very critical of Trump in the book 'American Carnage" by Tim Alberta of Politico, in excerpts running in various publications.

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan told the author of a new book retiring from Congress was his "escape hatch" from dealing with President Donald Trump and that his presidency is going downhill. "We helped him make much better decisions, which were contrary to kind of what his knee-jerk reaction was".

In his last tweet on Ryan Thursday, Trump said he had the House "Majority & blew it away with his poor leadership and bad timing" and "never knew how to go after the Dems like they go after us". "He promised me the Wall, & failed (happening anyway!)", he continued.

Trump also reminded Ryan that he was part of the failed 2012 presidential ticket with Sen. "For Paul Ryan to be complaining is pretty wonderful".

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., wave as they exit a campaign charter airplane at Cleveland Hopkins International airport, Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio. "I remember a day in Wisconsin, the state that I won, where I stood up and made a speech and then I introduced him and they booed him off the stage", Trump told reporters. "Not in government, but where we live our lives, we have a responsibility to try and rebuild". Be a good person. "Couldn't get him out of Congress fast enough!"

More strangely, Trump's indictment of Ryan's tenure includes lambasting him for failing to get subpoenas: "He was no leader ... he wouldn't get subpoenas ... when Nancy Pelosi hands them out like they're cookies". "The only success Paul Ryan had was the time he was with me".

Dawsey adds that Alberta "dings Vice President Pence and others for seeking to defend Trump as an evangelical and humble man behind the scenes seeking to help his country - while casting aside their core convictions".
