"As you know, NASA has been given a bold challenge to put the first woman and the next man on the Moon by 2024, with a focus on the ultimate goal of sending humans to Mars", Bridenstine said in the memo.

He named Kenneth Bowersox, a former NASA astronaut who made five space shuttle flights, as the new acting associate administrator.

Bill Hill, a deputy associate administrator under Gerstenmaier, was also moved to a special assistant position under NASA's associate administrator Steve Jurczyk.

Gerstenmaier began his career with NASA in 1977 doing aeronautical research.

Search giant Google Wednesday announced various "experiences" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing that had put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface on July 20, 1969.

"In an effort to meet this challenge, I have decided to make leadership changes to the Human Exploration and Operations (HEO) Mission Directorate".

It also plans to do the same thing with Neil Armstrong's spacesuit in order to let the user examine what astronauts wore on the surface of the Moon.

The Democratic chairwoman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology said she was "baffled" by Bridenstine's decision to demote Gerstenmaier without a permanent replacement to fill the role. "It is the stated policy of this administration and the United States of America to return American astronauts to the moon within the next five years".

"NASA has always been fortunate to have great talent that has served our country well", Bridenstine wrote.

In a memo addressed to the space agency's employees, Bridenstine explained that the leadership change is a bid to meet the challenges of the upcoming 2024 moon mission.

"If NASA is not now capable of landing American astronauts on the Moon in five years, we need to change the organization, not the mission, "Pence said then".

When Apollo 13 launched into the sunny Florida skies atop a Saturn V rocket that Saturday evening, the mission marked NASA's third lunar landing attempt.
