But Arsenal have stood firm and, upon their refusal to grant the former France global a free transfer, Koscielny responded by not joining his team-mates in the USA.

Arsenal have started disciplinary proceedings against Laurent Koscielny after the club captain refused to travel with the squad for their pre-season tour.

However, manager Unai Emery won't be able to call on the services on Koscielny as he's refused to travel Stateside.

An official statement on the club's website read: "We are very disappointed by Laurent's actions, which are against our clear instructions".

Koscielny's future at Arsenal is reportedly in doubt after entering the final year of his contract with no sign of a new deal. "We hope to resolve this matter and will not be providing any further comment at this time".

His compatriot, teenage centre-back William Saliba, is on the cusp of completing a transfer to Emirates Stadium, but is expected to then return to Saint-Etienne on loan.

He has made 353 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Lorient in 2010, scoring 27 goals and winning two FA Cups.

Koscielny's actions might have thrown a major spanner in the works, though. Arsenal is not a charity and he has a contract that he must either see out or be sold for a fee.

A move to Rennes is described as the "hottest" one, suggesting the player has a preference to return to Brittany over a move to Bordeaux, who have also been linked in the past.

Ultimately, Koscielny's sabre rattling isn't a disaster for Emery.
