Koscielny reportedly wanted a 12-month extension on his current deal that would keep him in north London until 2021. "We hope to resolve this matter and will not be providing any further comment at this time", the English Premier League club said in a statement on Thursday.

Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny has refused to go with the rest of the squad to United States of America for their pre-season tour and the club has made this public via a statement released on the club's official website.

A club statement on Thursday morning read: "Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel to the U.S. for our pre-season tour".

This could leave Arsenal with just Sokratis and Mavropanos as the only fit centre backs at the club.

This decision from Koscielny will no doubt have a huge impact on the locker room.

There was a groundswell of support on Twitter for £110,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender Hector Bellerin, who will miss the start of the season through injury.

Arsenal are set to take disciplinary action against their club captain, but Koscielny is hopeful that it should hasten his departure from the Emirates this summer. A £27 million (€34m) deal has been agreed for Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba, but he will spend the coming season back in France on loan with his former club. They now need to move quicker regardless of how this situation turns out. In short, he was the rock that held Arsenal together for many years.

The Gunners captain was expected to leave the club this summer after failing to make an impact under Unai Emery last season but the club are not too keen to let him leave without receiving a transfer fee.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, Arsenal said: "We are working closely with Bochum and Jordi and we are giving him our full support".
