Heat and humidity this weekend

Friday could be a record-breaker, and Environment Canada has now issued a warning due to the extreme heat.

While temperatures will drop down to 28 C Sunday, the humidex is calling for it to feel like 35 C. Throughout the weekend, there is a risk of strong thunderstorms and wind gusts over 35 km/h.

If the air temperature hits 100 at any point Friday through Sunday, it will be the first such instance since 2016. These warnings go into effect Friday at noon and will remain in effect through Saturday evening.

The Weather Service forecast office in Chicago, for example, is calling this "one of the hotter and more humid air masses since 2012".

By Monday-temperatures should return to the low 80s. Cooling centers and public parks are observing extended hours. A heat advisory is in effect for the higher elevations. The high in Omaha on Thursday was 92 degrees with a heat index of 103.

The heat and humidity may cause heat stress while outside.

"We actually were going to do cookies, but the store didn't have cookies so it's biscuits", Hallie Bova, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Valley, told the Omaha World-Herald.

Stay hydrated: Being thirsty is a sign that you're already at risk for dehydration, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Of the nine categories of weather-related deaths, heat fatalities ranks No. 1 over a 30-year average, and No. 2 over a 10-year average. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside, they advise. Heat-related illnesses increase when the human body is not given time to cool off overnight.

It seems likely July will also be a record hot month, according to Berkeley Earth, the California nonprofit which focuses its research on land temperature data analysis for climate science. Sunday's predicted low of 83 would set a record, just a degree off the warmest low for any month of the year in the city. The combination of high temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a risky situation in which heat illnesses are likely. An isolated shower/storm is possible with a mix of mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies.

How rare is this heat?
