Trump praises Kim Jong Un, says he received 'beautiful' letter from him

In February of 2017, two women smeared a substance on the face of Kim Jong Nam while he was in Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

"We have a very good relationship together", Trump said.

In emails to a Japanese journalist obtained by North Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper in 2012, Kim suggested that the regime would collapse under his younger brother, who he said "resembles my grandfather", North Korean dictator and founder Kim Il-sung.

The optimism that the two leaders generated in Singapore all but evaporated in February when a second summit, in Vietnam, dramatically fell apart without even a recommitment to the general goals outlined in a statement signed in Singapore.

Trump got asked about this and he responded by pledging to Kim Jong Un that he would not allow the Central Intelligence Agency to spy in this way "under my auspices".

Bob Baer, a former CIA case officer and CNN analyst, said that it is not a surprise that Trump would deny the USA has used spies to collect intelligence on North Korea. Kim Jong Un then had Jang purged, reports say.

The two sides haven't held working-level talks in months and North Korea hasn't responded to multiple requests to restart the negotiations, according to USA officials.

"The book says that security camera footage from Kim Jong Nam's last trip to Malaysia showed him in a hotel elevator with an Asian-looking man who was reported to be a USA intelligence agent", Reuter noted.

Moon's press secretary told a separate briefing that Kim Yo Jong also said her brother had a "special feeling" toward Lee. Fifield says Kim Jong Nam usually met his handlers in Singapore and Malaysia, citing a source with knowledge of the intelligence.

Trump and Kim Jong Un have had a hot-and-cold relationship as Washington and Pyongyang have negotiated over North Korea's development of nuclear weapons. But instead, the meeting underscored the breadth of disagreements between the two sides, with Trump leaving early and declaring Kim "not ready" to make a deal. North Korea has denied this.

South Korea's national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, quoted Kim Yo Jong as saying that she hoped for a continuation of the inter-Korean cooperation that the late first lady had worked for.

There was no mention of the letter in North Korean state media.

Trump said a third summit could happen soon, but added: "In the meantime he's kept his word ... that's very important to me".

As the Trump administration looks for ways to continue engagement with North Korea, Trump has repeatedly downplayed North Korea's latest test of a short-range ballistic missile.

In addition, the source revealed that United States intelligence officials were relieved that Kim Jong Nam's connection to the CIA was not revealed following his assassination.
