He didn't take the field due to the injury during the clash. post which he underwent scans in which the fracture came to light.

Later, reports suggested that Dhawan has been sidelined for at least three weeks.

While earlier it was speculated that the opener has been ruled out of the World Cup, the BCCI later released a statement stating that Shikhar Dhawan will be kept under observation.

His arrival will be a day before India's game against New Zealand and he won't be considered a replacement till the time the team management takes a final call on Dhawan's availability for the rest of the tournament.

"The team management has decided that Mr Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored".

- Cricbuzz (@cricbuzz) June 11, 2019Shikhar Dhawan is a vital cog in this Indian batting setup.

Dhawan suffered the injury as a result of a nasty blow from a rising delivery by Australia paceman Pat Cummins in the early phase of his innings but went on to complete his 17th one-day worldwide century.

The left hander played a brilliant knock against Australia at The Oval.

Dhawan along with physio Patrick Farhart, are now in Leeds for consultation with specialists, an hour's drive from Manchester.

Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant will be joining the Men in Blue as a cover for the injured Shikhar Dhawan in India's World Cup squad.

Even if Dhawan misses the Afghanistan game, the next match against West Indies in Manchester is on June 27, which gives him another six days' time to recover.

Thus, in his absence, it will be India's present no.4 batsmen- KL Rahul who will most likely open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma.
