Despite suffering an underwhelming season for United, the Belgian still scored one goal every two games on average - which ranked as the 12th best among Premier League forwards this season.

According to ESPN, the former Chelsea boss wanted him during his time at the Blues and has informed the club's hierarchy to secure his services to lead the side the main target-man, crucial for his tactical philosophy.

Lukaku was asked about his future after scoring twice as Belgium beat Scotland in Euro 2020 qualifying but remained tight-lipped on his potential next destination.

Speaking after the match, the 26-year-old hinted he has already told Manchester United where he wants to play football next season.

United are prepared to listen to offers for the Belgium worldwide but want to recoup the transfer fee they paid Everton in the summer of 2017.

"As far as my future is concerned I've already made a decision, but I can't announce it yet out of respect for Manchester United with whom I still have a contract".

"So for me the Serie A is my favourite league as well - I love Italy".

'With the transfer of Ronaldo, the Italian league is now coming back. Now Antonio Conte going back to Inter, which is really good because, to me he's the best manager in the world, and then you have Maurizio Sarri going to Juventus, Ancelotti at Naples.

Lukaku's United days are numbered as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer favours Marcus Rashford up front.

"United will speak with my agent but I've already made my decision and I'll stay out of proceedings".

"But that is a phase in my career and it will help me for the next step". "In any case, I am sure that it will be a very busy summer".

'I've had a hard season at club level, ' said Lukaku.

'I am going to enjoy my holidays with my family now.
