"Wishing His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, Sir, Grandpa a very Happy 98th Birthday!" the new parents wrote on Instagram.

Prince Philip also appeared in a photograph in May with his latest great-grandchild Archie, the infant son of Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

"Wishing a very Happy 98th Birthday to His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh!" the caption read.

The Sussexes also included an old black and white photo of the Queen and Prince Philip dancing together.

They also shared two photos, the first, a current photo of Harry, 34, and Philip smiling at each other. "The Duke of Edinburgh was born on this day in 1921". In this picture His Royal Highness was photographed in 1953, 66 years ago.

As expected, the duke, who retired from public duties in 2017 after decades of royal service, did not take part in the official events as part of the USA state visit and did not meet Mr Trump behind the scenes.

Philip, who has been married to the Queen for more than 71 years, is edging closer to his milestone 100th birthday in 2021. His mother and father were Princess Alice of Battenberg and Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark.

Philip met the then Princess Elizabeth in 1934, when she was 13.

"This is similar to the Duchess of Cambridge's maternity leave, where she made a few appearances at family and personal events, like Trooping the Colour, after [Prince] Louis and [Princess] Charlotte's births, but did not carry out any official duties as a member of the royal family during maternity leave", the source added.

Philip is said to divide his time between the Queen's Sandringham estate and Windsor and still enjoys his favourite hobby - carriage driving.
