Gov. Andrew Cuomo is on the scene and told CBS New York that it appeared the helicopter tried to make an emergency landing on the roof. The New York Fire Department said at least one person on the helicopter was killed.

"A call about the incident at the AXA Equitable Center on Seventh Avenue and West 49th Street came in shortly before 2 p.m.", the outlet reported.

The crash sparked a fire which has since been extinguished, the New York Police Department said.

Fire and police officials initially said a plane had crashed. The fire department believes the fire is under control.

"If you're a New Yorker you have a level of PTSD from 9/11 and I remember that morning all too well".

The FDNY said in a statement that the pilot of the helicopter has died. He said people in the building said they felt the building shake.

There is no helipad on top of the building's roof.

A law enforcement official told Fox News that evacuations are now underway in the building. "Please continue to avoid the area".
